Every birthing woman needs a Doula.
No matter how it happens –
a natural birth, an epidural, or a cesarean –
giving birth will be one of the most powerful experiences of a lifetime.
Benefits of a Doula:
- 60% less epidural requests
- 50% reduction in cesarean rates
- 40% reduction in artificial oxytocin use
- 40% reduction in forceps deliveries
- 30% less requests for pain relief
- 25% shorter labors
“If a doula were a drug, it would be considered unethical not to use it.”
Dr. John H. Kennell, MD
What is a doula?
As a Labor Doula, I provide physical, emotional, and evidence-based informational support to pregnant mothers and their partners before, during and immediately after birth. Doulas have been shown to significantly improve birth outcomes for mothers and their newborn babies.
As a Postpartum Doula, I help the mother and her family during the first week of her baby’s life. I offer emotional, physical and informational support for a variety of needs, from breastfeeding and infant care, to childcare and household chores.
To provide my mothers their best birth experiences, I need to be able to arrive at their birthing places within an hour’s drive. Here are some of the areas I serve as a Labor and Postpartum Doula:
Monteagle – Sewanee – Tracy City –
Winchester – Cowan – Decherd
Huntland – Belvedere – Fayetteville
Tullahoma – Estill Springs – Manchester
South Pittsburgh – Kimball – Jasper
Scottsboro – Bridgeport
Birth can be extremely challenging, and it can be absolutely ecstatic and beautiful. Either way, it is a sacred experience. Every precious soul entering this world deserves to be welcomed in a way that honors the miracle of life. And every woman bringing her baby to the world deserves to be honored for the incredible gift she gives to humanity: the gift of motherhood.
Giving birth can summon all of Nature’s miraculous power within us to love with all our being. And every woman needs that power, to fulfill that daunting task of a lifetime of loving care she is about to provide. Constant, loving and experienced support has been consistently shown to make the difference between a beautiful beginning, or a traumatic one.
The difference can mean empowering a woman to be an amazing mother, giving baby a positive foundation for life and establishing a deep and abiding loving bond. Or it can leave emotional wounds that hamper the capacity for love and joy in both mother and child.
As a mother of four children, I should know.
I’ve been through many different kinds of birth experiences. My first child was a cesarean; the rest were VBAC’s. One child was born at a birth center, another transported to the hospital, and the last was a beautiful successful birth at home.
Not only do I have plenty of personal experiences of birth, I also have learned a wealth of strategies, techniques, and wisdom from HypnoBirthing® training as well as Doula training with CAPPA, my doula certifying organization.
